We grieve, and we rejoice.

It is with a very heavy heart, and very mixed emotions that I share with you that our dear friend, and a great mentor in the service to others, has passed away.

1850917_origTeri Gant, founder and CEO of The Father’s Heart Street Ministry, who we have been cooking and working with for many years, passed this week.

Teri was, by far, the most giving and compassionate person I have ever had the privilege to know.

We met many years ago at Sunnyside Foursquare Church, where her ministry began, simply and faithfully taking bags of homemade sandwiches to the homeless in the Clackamas area. She sought no credit or glory, but ministered as she was called, week in and week out.

It wasn’t about her, is was about Jesus.

FullSizeRenderHer tireless and selfless work expanded into a shelter and feeding center in Clackamas, where MY KITCHEN was honored to provide turkeys for the annual Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless.

Many of you have given to and supported this event every year, and on behalf of myself and Teri, I say thank you.

Eventually, her outreach moved to a new facility in Oregon City, where Teri continued to minister and change lives for “the least of these” among us.

We continued to do summer BBQ’s and Thanksgiving turkeys, and watched as Teri loved and gave everything to the work that God called her to. She was my example, my mentor, and my inspiration.

photo4I have, personally, never known anyone who more clearly and faithfully demonstrated “Jesus with skin on” than my friend Teri Gant.

The number of lives and souls that Teri saved cannot be counted, and the love and comfort she so easily shared with others is the finest example of the Great Commission that I have ever known.

She will continue to be the example I look to of a servants heart, and unfailing love.

Her ministry was to the “inglorious”…the homeless, the mentally ill, the drug addicts, the prostitutes, she loved without judgement, and those who needed Jesus the most, trusted her unfailing love. She touched the lepers of our society, without fear or judgement, and she brought to them the healing power of Christ.

4580586My mixed emotions come from the grief I feel that I will no longer see my friend here on Earth, take strength from her selfless example, or see her beautiful smile as she touches the lives of those around her, and yet, at the same time I rejoice that she is now with her savoir, whom she loved so very much, and served so faithfully, to the last.

Teri, I will miss your laughter, your encouragement, and your shared dreams and prayers for our fledgling outreach, as we sat in your office and talked about the needs around us.

I will miss your generosity as we dug through your freezers for meals, and planned our meals, and fundraisers, and appreciation dinners.

Teri Gant was the best example I have ever known of a true and unfailing servant of Jesus Christ, and we say in her memory, what she has now surely heard from the lips of her beloved bridegroom…

MY KITCHEN is a hands-on learning program; a series of basic nutrition, planning, shopping, and cooking classes for at-risk youth, including children recovering from abuse, and foster-care teens who are preparing to live on their own for the first time. We also cook for homeless shelters and family warming centers, and offer our cooking services for other charity’s fundraisers.

Our Heroes Circle allows our supporters to set up automated monthly donations, in the amount of their choice, via the secure servers at GoFundMe. Set up a monthly donation from $5 to $50 to $500…every dollar is a blessing to our kids!

Heroes receive detailed updates of all of our current outreach events, invitations to appreciation events, and get the change to help us decided on important decisions for each upcoming year.

We believe that BIG dreams require BIG goals, and some of our goals (food truck for summer meal programs, 3-Day Cooking Camps, Etc.) are pretty big. That said…our first goal for monthly contributors is $2,000. This amount would cover all classes through the end of the year, as well and reach our fund-raising goals for the food truck.

I know, right?

So…let’s make it fun, shall we?

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a poll on Facebook, letting folks choose a “prize” if we meet our Spring/Summer fund-raising goal for our “Heroes” program.

The choices were…

~Vegan for a week (with posted diary)

We opened it up to suggestions as well, just no piercings, or anything that could be dangerous, or illegal.


~Tattoo: 45 votes
~Mohawk: 83 votes
~Vegan 4 a week: 122 Votes (you guys are heartless!)

Now, let’s make this interesting…

If, by July 15th 2016, we have reached $500 per month (that’s just 20 $25 pledges) I’ll get the tattoo.

If, by the same date, we reach $1000 per month, it’s the Mohawk, which I will proudly wear as we teach classes at this summer’s Sparks of Hope healing camps for kids.

$1500 in monthly pledges, gets the week in hell (100% vegan diet).

AND…if we manage to hit the full $2000.00 mark, or more…I’LL DO ALL THREE!

Julia Carolyn Child (August 15, 1912 – August 13, 2004) was an American chef, author, and television personality.

She is recognized for bringing French cuisine to the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television programs, the most notable of which was The French Chef, which premiered in 1963.

She was, in this cook’s opinion, the single most important and positive influence on cooking in America that we have ever had, or likely ever will have.

Okay, so apparently there has been some confusion. :)

Our September pop-up dinner is NOT a black-tie event (God forbid…)

While we would prefer to avoid jeans, shorts, or tennis shoes, a nice business-casual attire will do nicely.

In short, just wear something your mother would be proud of.

Our first BIG fund-raising dinner for our MY KITCHEN Program, this September 12th. Our one-night only pop-up restaurant, “Le Couteaux Trois”, will be at an undisclosed (for now) location in the Portland/Metro area.

The evening will include a 15-course gourmet tapas dinner, music, a silent raffle auction, and perhaps even a little dancing if the spirit moves us.

This will be a “dress up” event (Guy’s – extra points if your wear a tie, lol), with limited seating. Tickets will be a minimum donation of $45.00 per seat, purchased in advance.

There will be 10 seats available at the Chef’s Table, which will come with a few nice “extras” and lots of witty and urbane conversation with Chef Chris and Chef Terry (and I’ll be there, too.)

Only 50 seats will be available for general seating.

Chef’s Table seats will be reserved for the first nine donations of $100.00 or more.
