Summer is a particularly tough time for kids facing hunger. No school means there’s no safety net of school meals for kids who don’t get enough to eat at home.
But there’s a solution: Free summer meals — funded by the USDA — are available to kids and teens age 18 and under at thousands of summer meals sites across the country. Leading up to summer, we’ve been working hard to expand the number of summer meals sites across the country.
Now we need to let kids and their families know that the programs exist, so they can get connected to the meals that they need. I hope you can help us get the word out in your community.
To make sure more kids know about free summer meals, No Kid Hungry has:
- Launched a text messaging pilot program so individuals can text in their zip code to find the closest meals site to their home.
- Worked with our partners at the American Federation of Teachers to get information about summer meals distributed to 77,000 AFT members across 17 states to share with their students before school let out for the summer.
- And we started canvassing in high need neighborhoods in select cities, going door-to-door to let families know about the free meals.
